GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 11th January, 1915.

F

I have the honour to transuit for your consideration the enclosed copy of correspondence with Messrs. Sanders Rehders & Co., Ltd. which is apparently a British Company carrying on business! in Manchester and London, on the subject of the winding up of the German Firm of Sander Wieler & Co. in this Colony.

Mr. James Backhouse, an Englishman of good repute,

was in the employ of Messrs. Sander Wieler & Co. and it was at the

express request of Mr. A. Becker, the Head of the firm in question,

that Messrs. H. Wicking & Co. were appointed Liquidators in this

case.

Another firm, in the piece goods business, had been selected; and it was no doubt owing to the fact that it was intimated that Mr.

Backhouse would be kept on by the Liquidators that Lr. Becker was

anxious that his firm, which appears to have acted as Agents for

Messrs. Sanders Rehders & Co., should be wound up by a firm which

enjoyed Mr. Backhouse's assistance.

2.

I have no knowledge of the firm of Sanders Rehders k

Co.,Ltd. But if they are a British Company I see no objection to

their appointing Mr. Backhouse to be their agent in Hongkong for

their business in the Far East. This would, of course, involve his

doing new business on behalf of Lessrs. Sanders Rehders & Co., and

while I can see no objection to this it would not be a popular arrangement among local British firms, engaged in the piece goods

trade, some of whom no doubt hope to acquire the Agencies of Kessrs,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LEWIS HARCOURT, L.P.,
